What is IPPT?
The Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) is a physical fitness test administered to assess the physical fitness of servicemen in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Police Force (SPF), and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
Introduced in its current three-station format in 2015, the IPPT measures physical readiness through three key components: push-ups, sit-ups, and a 2.4km run. The test ensures that personnel maintain the fitness standards required for operational effectiveness.
Scoring System
The IPPT scoring system is based on a total of 100 points distributed across three stations:
- Push-ups: Maximum 25 points
- Sit-ups: Maximum 25 points
- 2.4km Run: Maximum 50 points
The scoring is age and gender-specific, with different performance standards for different age groups. Scores are calculated based on the number of repetitions for push-ups and sit-ups, and the time taken for the 2.4km run.
Minimum Performance Rule
Important: To achieve a passing grade, a serviceman must score at least one point in each of the three stations. Failure to score in any single station results in an automatic "Fail" status, regardless of the total points accumulated.
This rule ensures that personnel maintain a balanced level of fitness across all components rather than excelling in one area while neglecting others.
Award Categories & Incentives
Based on your total IPPT score, you will be awarded one of five categories. NSmen (National Servicemen) who pass their IPPT receive monetary incentives:
| Award Category | Standard Points | Elite Points | NSman Incentive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | 85 - 100 | 90 - 100 | $500 |
| Silver | 75 - 84 | 80 - 89 | $300 |
| Pass with Incentive | 61 - 74 | 61 - 74 | $200 |
| Pass | 51 - 60 | 51 - 60 | $0 |
| Fail | < 51 | < 51 | $0 |
Age Group Categories
IPPT scoring is divided into age categories with three-year bands. Each age group has different performance standards to account for natural changes in physical fitness with age:
| Age Category | Age Range (Years) |
|---|---|
| Category 1 | Below 22 |
| Category 2 | 22 - 24 |
| Category 3 | 25 - 27 |
| Category 4 | 28 - 30 |
| Category 5 | 31 - 33 |
| Category 6 | 34 - 36 |
| Category 7 | 37 - 39 |
| Category 8 | 40 - 42 |
| Category 9 | 43 - 45 |
| Category 10 | 46 - 48 |

Elite Vocation Standards
Personnel from elite vocations such as Commandos, Divers, and Guards are subject to more stringent requirements for Gold and Silver awards:
- Gold Award: Requires 90-100 points (vs. 85-100 for standard)
- Silver Award: Requires 80-89 points (vs. 75-84 for standard)
This higher standard reflects the enhanced physical demands of these specialized roles.
IPPT Window - 12 Month Period
Your first IPPT window starts on your first birthday after your Operationally Ready Date (ORD), and ends a day before your next birthday.
Example:
If your ORD is on 28 Mar 2020 and your birthday is on 23 May 2020, your first IPPT window starts on 23 May 2020 and ends on 22 May 2021.
If your birthday falls before your ORD (e.g. 24 February before your ORD on 28 Mar 2020), your first IPPT window will only start on your next birthday the following year, i.e. 24 February 2021, and ends on 23 February 2022.
Thereafter, your next IPPT window will start again on your next birthday. Your IPPT window continues until you are no longer required to take your IPPT.
Passing Criteria
You need to take and pass your annual IPPT within your IPPT window.
The IPPT comprises 3 stations – Push-Ups, Sit-Ups and 2.4km Run. To pass, you need to score a minimum of 1 point in each station, and achieve a total score of at least 51 out of 100 points. The IPPT scoring system is calibrated to your age, and you will receive different incentive awards depending on the total score.
You can take your IPPT conducted during your In-Camp Training (ICT), at Fitness Conditioning Centres (FCCs).
Failing Your IPPT
IPPT Failure:
If you fail your IPPT, you may retake it multiple times within your IPPT window. If your current IPPT window has closed and you still have not passed your IPPT, you will need to complete 10 sessions of mandatory NS Fitness Improvement Training (FIT) in your next IPPT window.
ORNS - Operationally Ready National Service
After completing Full-time National Service (NS), all male Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents are required to serve in the Operationally Ready National Service (ORNS) until they reach 40 years old (for Officers) or 50 years old (for other ranks).
During ORNS, NSmen are required to:
- Attend annual In-Camp Training (ICT) cycles
- Pass their annual IPPT within their designated IPPT window
- Maintain their operational readiness and skills
Failure to fulfill these ORNS obligations may result in penalties under the Enlistment Act.
Pre-Enlistee IPPT Benefits
Pre-Enlistee Benefits: Pre-enlistees who achieve a score of 61 points or higher (Pass with Incentive) qualify for an 8-week reduction in their full-time National Service duration.
NS FIT Program: In the event of a "Fail" or "Incomplete" status, personnel are required to attend the mandatory 10-session NS Fitness Improvement Training (FIT) program to improve their fitness levels.
