## Preparing for and taking the IPPT: step by step

Scoring depends on your age band and gender. Check the OneNS tables or use the calculator for your numbers.

1. **Know your age band and gender** (Before training) — Points tables are set by age band and gender, so the same result scores differently across bands.
2. **Set a target award** (Before training) — Pass is 51, Pass with Incentive 61, Silver 75, Gold 85. You need at least 1 point in every station.
3. **Train the weakest station** (In the weeks before the test) — The run is worth up to 50 points, but zero points in push-ups or sit-ups will still fail the test.
4. **Enter your results in the calculator** (After a practice session) — Enter repetitions and the run time to see points and the award you would earn.
5. **Take the test and check your incentive** (In your IPPT window) — Incentives are paid about 14 days after the test, or immediately at a Fitness Conditioning Centre if PayNow is linked.

## What the IPPT tests

The Individual Physical Proficiency Test measures fitness through three stations:

| Station | Maximum points |
| --- | --- |
| Push-ups | 25 |
| Sit-ups | 25 |
| 2.4km run | 50 |
| **Total** | **100** |

Points depend on your **age band and gender**: the same number of repetitions or the same run time earns different points in different bands.

## Awards

| Award | Points | NSman incentive |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Gold | 85 and above (90 for Commandos, Divers and Guards) | $500 |
| Silver | 75 to 84 | $300 |
| Pass with Incentive | 61 to 74 | $200 |
| Pass | 51 to 60 | none |
| Fail | Below 51, or 0 points in any station | none |

To pass you need at least 51 points **and** at least 1 point in each station.

## Retakes and payment

- NSmen can retake the IPPT within their window. If a later attempt earns a higher award, you are paid only the **difference**: someone paid $200 for Pass with Incentive who later reaches Silver gets $100 more.
- Only **one Gold award** is allowed per IPPT window.
- Awards are generally paid about **14 days** after the test. If you test at a Fitness Conditioning Centre and have PayNow linked to your NRIC, payment can be immediate.

## Worked example

| Result | Points (example) | Award |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Push-ups 20 pts, sit-ups 22 pts, run 45 pts | 87 | Gold, $500 |
| Push-ups 15 pts, sit-ups 15 pts, run 48 pts | 78 | Silver, $300 |
| Push-ups 10 pts, sit-ups 12 pts, run 40 pts | 62 | Pass with Incentive, $200 |
| Push-ups 0 pts, sit-ups 25 pts, run 50 pts | 75 | Fail (0 in one station) |

Station points above are illustrative. Your own points come from the age-band table.

> **Tip:** Because a zero in any station fails the test, it is worth securing a few points in your weakest station before chasing a higher run time.

## Common mistakes

- **Chasing the run only.** A zero in push-ups or sit-ups is an automatic fail.
- **Using the wrong age band.** Tables change by band.
- **Expecting a second payout in full.** A retake pays only the difference.
- **Forgetting the elite Gold mark.** Commandos, Divers and Guards need 90.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is a passing IPPT score?**

A passing score is 51-60 points total, with at least 1 point scored in each of the three stations (push-ups, sit-ups, and 2.4km run). Scoring zero in any station results in automatic failure.

**How is IPPT scored?**

IPPT has a maximum of 100 points distributed as: push-ups (25 points), sit-ups (25 points), and 2.4km run (50 points). Scoring is age and gender-specific, with different standards for each age group.

**What are the IPPT award categories?**

Gold (85-100 points for standard, 90-100 for elite), Silver (75-84 for standard, 80-89 for elite), Pass with Incentive (61-74 points), Pass (51-60 points), and Fail (below 51 or zero in any station).

**What is the NSman IPPT monetary incentive?**

NSmen receive monetary incentives: $500 for Gold, $300 for Silver, and $200 for Pass with Incentive. These are awarded when you pass your IPPT within your designated window.

**What happens if I fail IPPT?**

You can retake IPPT multiple times within your window. If you don't pass by the window's end, you must complete 10 mandatory NS Fitness Improvement Training (FIT) sessions in your next window.

**What is the minimum performance rule?**

You must score at least 1 point in each station (push-ups, sit-ups, and run). Scoring zero in any single station results in automatic failure, regardless of your total score.

**Who needs to take IPPT?**

All male Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents in Operationally Ready National Service (ORNS) must take and pass annual IPPT until age 40 (officers) or 50 (other ranks).

**What are elite vocation standards?**

Commandos, Divers, and Guards face stricter standards: Gold requires 90-100 points (vs. 85-100 standard), Silver requires 80-89 points (vs. 75-84 standard).

**When is my IPPT window?**

Your IPPT window is a 12-month period starting from your first birthday after your Operationally Ready Date (ORD) and ending the day before your next birthday.

**Can pre-enlistees get NSF reduction?**

Yes, pre-enlistees who score 61 points or higher (Pass with Incentive) qualify for an 8-week reduction in their full-time National Service duration.
