What you pay
To keep a vehicle past its COE you renew by paying the Prevailing Quota Premium (PQP) of its category.
| Renewal | Cost |
|---|---|
| 10 years | The PQP |
| 5 years | 50% of the PQP, rounded up to the nearest dollar |
The PQP is the moving average of the quota premiums in the last three months in which bidding was held, and is set each month after the second bidding exercise. A Category E COE is renewed under the vehicle’s own category A to D.
How many times
- Categories A, B and D: unlimited 10-year renewals, but a 5-year renewal only once, after which you cannot renew again.
- Category C: 5-year renewals can repeat until the vehicle reaches its statutory lifespan (20 years for goods vehicles).
- Cars have no statutory lifespan, except tuition cars registered to companies (10 years).
When you renew changes the start date
| When you renew | PQP used | New COE starts | Old COE |
|---|---|---|---|
| In an earlier month | PQP of the month you renew | 1st of the next month | Rest is forfeited |
| In the month it expires | PQP of that month | The day after it expires | Nothing forfeited |
| After expiry, within 1 month | PQP of the expiry month, plus a late fee | The vehicle is deregistered until renewed | |
| More than 1 month after expiry | Vehicle must be disposed of immediately |
Example: a COE expiring on 5 August. Renewing on 20 July uses the July PQP, the new COE starts on 1 August and 1 to 5 August (5 days) are forfeited. Renewing on 1 August uses the August PQP and forfeits nothing. Renewing late by 6 September is too late.
