How grades count

Each grade counts from A1 = 1 to F9 = 9. The gross aggregate is the sum of the grades used, and the net aggregate is the gross minus bonus points. The admission criteria are set on the gross aggregate; the net aggregate is used for posting.

2027 JAE (O-Level): L1R5

JC admission needs a gross L1R5 of 20 or better across six O-Level subjects.

  • L1: English Language or Higher Mother Tongue.
  • R5: three relevant subjects, which must be two Mathematics/Science and one Humanities, or the reverse (applied subjects such as Design and Technology, and Nutrition and Food Science are not relevant subjects), plus the two other best-scoring subjects.
  • Bonus points: at most 4.

2028 JAE onwards (G3): L1R4

Part Subject
L1 English or Higher Mother Tongue
R1 Best Humanities subject
R2 Best Mathematics or Science subject
R3 Best of the Humanities, Mathematics or Science subjects left
R4 Best of any subject left

A gross L1R4 of 16 or less is needed for JC and 20 or less for MI. With Higher Mother Tongue, the aggregate is worked out with English and with Higher Mother Tongue and the better one is used. Religious Knowledge cannot be one of the best-scoring subjects.

Bonus points are capped at 3, and a Chinese, Malay or Tamil Language Elective Programme place adds 2 more.

Rules that apply to both

  • Higher Mother Tongue and Mother Tongue of the same language cannot both be used.
  • Minimum grades apply to specific subjects. For 2028: English A1 to C6; Mathematics A1 to D7; Mother Tongue A1 to D7 at G3 (Higher Mother Tongue A1 to E8).
  • Polytechnics use ELR2B2: English + 2 relevant subjects + 2 best subjects, net aggregate of 26 or less (28 for Nursing). CCA bonus points: 2 for a CCA grade of A1 or A2, 1 for B3 to C6. This calculator does not cover polytechnics.

Worked example

English 2; Mathematics 1, Chemistry 2, Geography 3, Literature 3, two more subjects 3 and 4; 2 bonus points.

  • L1R5 (2027): L1 2 + relevant 1 + 2 + 3 + best two 3 and 3 = 14, net 12.
  • L1R4 (2028): L1 2 + R1 3 + R2 1 + R3 2 + R4 3 = 11, net 9.

Frequently asked questions

What is L1R5?

Your first language (English or Higher Mother Tongue) plus five subjects: three relevant subjects (two Mathematics/Science and one Humanities, or the reverse) and your two other best subjects. JC admission in the 2027 JAE needs 20 or better.

What changes in 2028?

JC and MI admission moves to L1R4 with G3 subjects: JC needs 16 or less and MI 20 or less, and one fewer subject is counted.

Is the gross or the net aggregate used for eligibility?

The admission criteria are on the gross aggregate. Bonus points are subtracted to get the net aggregate for posting.

Can I use both Higher Mother Tongue and Mother Tongue?

No. Only one of the two in the same language can be used in the aggregate.

Does this cover polytechnics?

No. Polytechnics use ELR2B2 with relevant subjects set for each aggregate type, which this calculator does not model.
